The Grid paintings emerged from the World's greatest paintings series. I mixed expressive painting gestures with a grid. It turned out to be an exciting combination. By adding straight lines to the chaos of accidental paint strokes, harmony was created. Only afterwards I realised that the simple and powerful compositions of the Grid paintings refer to the street plan and the high facades as well as to the boundless energy of the Big Apple.
After I moved to Dakar in 1995 I continued in the same way. This resulted in nineteen variations based on the same template of 15 squares.
